Microsoft released Office 2019 for Windows and Mac. This is the first big update to Microsoft Office since the 2016 version, which brings lots of changes. If you are not using Office 365, then you must purchase this upgrade for all users or upgrade to Office 365 to receive this update.

Making the move to Office 2019 can seem too expensive to some, or you’re not willing to commit to a monthly subscription, you also have Office Online. This option is free, and it allows you access to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with all the essential features most regular users will need to get the work done. The apps are available from virtually anywhere, plus you get 5GB of OneDrive to store your documents and photos.

Word

Word has a new Focus mode, which darkens the screen and reduces the displayed UI elements. New “Learning Tools,” are included such as text-to-speech, text spacing, and translator features.

Outlook

Outlook is also getting a focus mode, called the “Focused Inbox,” to help streamline workflow and email drafting. Users can now use “@” commands for tagging people in emails, and contact cards have been overhauled. PC users can now use travel and delivery cards.

PowerPoint

PowerPoint changes include enhanced media and visual element support in presentations. New support for 3D model display/manipulation and SVG files on slides, new morph transitions, and the ability to export your presentation in 4K UHD video format. You can now write by hand and move elements with your pencil while editing.

OneNote

OneNote is now OneNote for Windows 10, which includes Ink-to-Text support. Handwritten words will turn into typed text. Content now syncs between connected devices.

Excel

Excel gets a host of new functions—like new formulas and chart options, and support for 2D maps and timelines—to better present and organize your data.

If you’re using an Office 365 subscription, your office apps will be updated with the new features as they’re released, so you don’t have to worry about manually upgrading.
